Purposefulness

1 min readJun 6, 2025

I’ve been going to a gym with a large body building community for several months now.

One of the obvious differences I’ve noticed between the competitive body builders and the more enthusiast/amateur crowd, is that the competitive segment is much more deliberate and calculated in how they approach their workouts.

Where an amateur will typically follow a workout routine from their favorite online fitness coach week over week, a competitor will subtly adjust their programming as needed to tackle very specific parts of their body that they want to focus on developing.

Where an amateur is in a sort of autopilot mode, focused on completing workouts, a competitor is reassessing the state of their progress constantly.

There is strong and distinct sense of purposefulness when you consider the approach of the competitor. It’s what enables them to be competitive in the first place.

A reasonable rule of thumb: the better you want to get at something, the more attention to detail, reflection, and path-adjusting you will need to adopt.

When you pay attention to critical details that you did not previously pay attention to, when you reflect on things that you previously didn’t reflect on, you position yourself to learn and grow faster.
