The next time someone doesn’t show up to a meeting,

or someone doesn’t respond in what you think is a timely manner,

or someone seems frustrated, angered, or unenthusiastic,

Do yourself and that person a favor: pause your judgment and seek to understand first.

People’s lives are complex and we rarely know the full extent of what they may be going through.

The no-show, the unresponsiveness, and the attitude are usually symptoms of something else that merits attention, empathy, and compassion.

If we want to be happier, reduce suffering, work better together, and do better work, it’s important to understand this fact, and be intentional about choosing compassion and empathy above all else.
