The necessity of downtime

At least 30% of the time when I sit down to write, it quickly becomes clear that I have no idea what to write yet.

My instinct to put my head down and ‘just think harder’ has always proven unhelpful, and I’ve been better served by walking away and doing something else.

In a world where being away from your work station or postponing a task is equated to idle time and lost efficiency which we have been conditioned to avoid at all costs, it becomes increasingly harder to step away or take a break.

This is to our disadvantage.

The best ideas get a chance to form and crystallize when you’re not desperately chasing after them.
