What’s the plan?

Early in his book Die With Zero, Bill Perkins says something that I found particularly sobering:

“…it stands to reason that you should put some serious thought and effort into planning the kinds of experiences that you want for yourself. Without that kind of deliberate planning, you’re bound to just follow our culture’s well-trodden, default path through life — to coast on autopilot.

In other words, an exceptionally strong desire to do anything stands on fundamentally weak foundation without a plan.

Whether it’s going on a special trip, making it to a concert, creating shared memories with friends and family, or reading a book that’s been on your reading list for years — make a plan about when, how, and (where applicable) with whom you’ll do it. It does not have to be precise, but in general the more concrete the better.

The quickest way to kill the chances of something happening is to punt the idea of doing it to something as vague and unhelpful as “someday”.
